Very nice all original (including polished glass) Aussie Pogue from April 1973 in great condition on its original Stelux bracelet that will fit up to a 19cm wrist. All original including polished glass and good length Stelux bracelet. This is one of those R dials with an incredibly deep rich honey glow. Just serviced and re-lumed by @be.vintage.gb so running beautifully with bright glow for those who like to see the time at night.
These watches are referred to as the 'Pogue' after Colonel William Pogue who wore his own personal 6139-6005 on NASA's Skylab 4 mission in 1973, the third and final mission to the United States’ first space station. Although the 6139 was never formally approved for mission use, Pogue stated that his operated flawlessly during his time in space where he used it to time engine burns. Pogue said that as he had been using his Seiko during training for up to a year before the mission launched (they weren't issued their Omega Speedmasters until very late in training) and had grown familiar with his Seiko, he decided to bring it as his trusted timepiece without seeking official approval from NASA.
The 'Aussie Pogue' variant was produced for the Oceania/SE Asia/Australian market and distributed by the Thong Sia Co. Ltd in Singapore, they requested Seiko to supply them 6002's with black inner rotating bezels and English/Roman day wheels. These wheels were introduced to make them more universal thus negating the need to produce individual day wheels for the different countries in their distribution areas. They also added their own solid link Seiko signed Stelux bracelets which are widely acknowledged to be of a superior quality to the standard pressed link Seiko bracelets which were supplied on the watches in all other regions.
