Available is this very clean 7017-6050 Seiko 5 Sports Speed-Timer from April 1971. All original and made only for the Japanese Domestic Market.
A fine example of one Seiko Daini's 'Flyback' chronographs. Released in 1971 the 7017 boasted the worlds slimmest automatic chronograph movement, at a mere 5.9mm it held this record for a quite staggering 16 years until 1987. This variant that was only ever sold in Japan is widely referred to as the 'Flyback' as it allows the wearer to reset the timer without the need to stop the chronograph - With regular chronographs the user needs to stop, reset, then restart - The obvious benefit being that the user can skip the stop and restart steps to time a new event. The name comes from the motion of the Chrono hands 'fly back' action when returning to the zero position when the reset pusher is engaged whilst already running. Hands, dial and lume are all in excellent shape, the sweep hand, which often fade, retains its vibrant orange colour. Day/Date display at 3 o'clock with English/Kanji days with quickset working as it should. Comes on its original XAA 521 bracelet which will fit up to a 20cm wrist.
All original including it's hardlex crystal. These watches have incredible wrist presence and were first produced in 1970 as Seiko's answer to the growing popularity of rally timer watches. Automatic chronograph with internal rotating bezel with tachymeter scale, operated via the crown. Chrono functions all working as they should, buttons click nice and firmly and sweep hand resets perfectly to zero. Day/date turn over at midnight & quickset works as it should. Cosmetically the watch is in excellent condition.
Movement: Original, SEIKO Daini 7017A - Service history unknown but the movement is clean, free of any deterioration and keeping great vintage time.
Pusher, crown and caseback gaskets replaced but not guaranteed waterproof
Dial: Black, in excellent condition
Day/Date at 3 o'clock Day in English and Kanji, features the classic Sunday in red
Case: Original, unpolished stainless steel in great condition, case-back is excellent with serial number and reference very well defined
Year and location of manufacture - April 1971 - Serial No.144104 - Japan SEIKO Daini Factory
A word of caution: I strongly advise you to do plenty of research before committing your hard earned money to buying a vintage Seiko. It may come as a surprise considering Seiko are not considered 'high end' that many parts on watches you will see for sale are aftermarket (in other words fake) and many pieces are what's known in the trade as 'Frankens' - watches cobbled together from various sources and probably also sporting lots of fake parts too - It used to be quite easy to spot these watches but fake parts are getting harder and harder to tell from the real thing, so please be very wary. Something I would also advise is to 'buy the seller' and hopefully as you are here it means you're considering doing just that. I have spent many years building my reputation and doing the research so you don't have to. Feel free to contact me with questions and I am always more than happy to provide referrals.
